Default Will i need a new operating system for new chip?

So i am looking into things to gets with my taxes in a few months, and a nice Core 2 Duo is inching towards the top, but i have one worry. I bought my computer custom built from CyberPower PC(runs beautiful) and they only sent me a backup disc not a Windows Vista disc. Therefore, if i am correct, i would need to buy a new version of windows when i go to install the new chip, or could i just wipe the hdd, install the chip and then install the backup and it will change the settings accordingly? I would really hate to get a new chip and have to buy a new version of windows to use it.

Oh actually i just thought of something. I have the serial key for my vista, so could i borrow someone elses disc and then use my code to activate it? I don't know how Vista installs and stuff since it was pre installed, but i assume i could just do this then can't i? Anyways Thanks.

nope you have to get a new copy. its only 100 bucks to get a new copy of vista. so just do that.

EDIT: wait are you just upgrading your computer or building a new one if so then you dont need to even reinstall windows.

For a new CPU you usually don't need to reinstall Windows. For replacing a motherboard, you do though.

In the worst case, you may need to reactivate Windows online, or by phone. However, you don't need a new operating system, nor do you need to reinstall your current one, if you're only replaceing the CPU.

oh sweet!?! So it's basically just like upgrading memory or a graphics card where you plug in, install drivers and your all set? Sweet.
