I purchased a retail key for XP pro, but the only CD I have is my OEM/Academic version. I can use the OEM CD to install and just enter the retail key when prompted, correct?

No it wont work , I have tried using Dell / HP OEM disks to redo peoples windows
that have a key, the problem is OEM keys are stored in the BIOS's and don't prompt you typically. Try it can't hurt but I have never had success with that it always gives an error.

No, this isn't from a dell or hp. Actually, I think it is an academic copy. I call it OEM as it is not retail. I'll change the title.

It won't work. OEM is different the retail. The keys are not interchangeable, no way, no how.

hmmm, anyone have a copy of a retail CD? lol I get a bit confused re: oem/retail etc.
Just to clarify, I purchased the CD from an online retailer and it is listed as an academic copy on the CD. I installed it a year and a half ago and it was running fine. I had to call MS 6 mos. later after changing my DVD drive. (picked it up as a hardware change) A few moinths ago, I got a new mobo and did a re-install and I used the key on the CD package (not the newer one I got from MS after the dvd drive swap). I didn't have to call MS like I did the last time. I am building an Intel PC and was planning on using the retail key so I could run bothe PC's. I was assuming I could use the first disc to install and just ad the retail key in when prompted. Is there anything else I can do or am I stuck until I get a copy of a retail CD?

Yeah I think each version of windows has a different set of keys. Pre-SP1 disks have a different key set than SP1 disks which have a different set of keys than SP2 which have a different set than OEM... etc
