i've got a computer at work that gets the error "unmountable boot device" on startup. i've tried everything i can to fix it. i've been able to recover files from the drive so it doesn't seem that the hdd is bad. i have the cds that came with it (its a dell laptop) so i was wondering if there is a way to reinstall xp over top of the current install and just replace the system files that seem to be gone or corrupt. any ideas?

When you boot from the XP Disk it will come to a screen where it ask you to f8 to accept the license agreement. Immediately following that it will search for previously installed Windows, and it will ask you to either repair ( by pressing the "R" button) or "ESC" to go passed the screen to do a full install. Once you hit the "R" for repair it will begin the process of repair installing Windows. It will keep all of your files and virus if there are any.

yeah, thats what i thought too, but i guess the first OS is too far gone because it doesn't even recognize it at all or give me that option. it goes straight to choosing which partition to install too, and then after that it goes to which format option i want.
