I've had windows home server running on a machine for maybe a week or two now. i have reinstalled the OS 3 times in total, and the server has yet to survive 24 hours without crashing/freezing. (the machine isn't overclocked). so when it freezes i have no choice but to restart it, which causes the RAID that windows creates to become unstable so it has to perform a chkdsk which takes forever, or it just doesn't boot, or i have to completely reinstall (see above). i don't know what to do. i love the idea of whs but its functionality as a server is lost when it crashes every day.

Install XP or Linux... see if it has issuese as well.
Have you stress tested your system?

Yeah, i'd say your easiest options would be A) install regular XP and just setup file sharing (should be easy enough) or B) just setup a linux distro. Since you're only using this for file storage (not as your gateway\firewall\etc) then you really dont have to have a server OS, you just need something functional that will facilitate sharing.

ohh BTW.. dunno if you'd be interested or not, but Ubuntu just put out a "media center edition" that we're playing with and it looks pretty friendly so far... google it if you want more info. The distro is called "Mythbuntu"
