Default Problem installing Windows

When i went to install windows xp pro on my usb drive it said "computers startup program cannot gain access to the disk". Anyone got any ideas?

The disk is an external hard drive through the usb port.

if it shows up, you should be able to boot from it if you put external devices in your boot order. Also, why do you WANT to install windows on your usb drive?

Also, someone else may want to chime in...I've heard of installing/booting FROM a usb, but have no knowledge about installing windows TO a usb drive...if that's possible. Theoretically it seems possible, maybe just impractical.

Just to clarify its a seagate 320gb external hard drive. Getting it to boot the usb hard drive isnt the problem its the fact that windows wont recognise the hard drive. Oh and the reason i need to install it on my external hard drive is because my current one is dying.
