Default YAY, virus

My friend (who is illeterate) was using my computer. he told me that he downloaded something and then when he ran it the PC crashed. I can't boot unless in safe mode. I didn't have any protection (kinda like HIV huh). Any advice. downloading spybot and avg now to try and sort this out. Help 640x400 sucks!

Never let your bonehead friend use your comp?
If its a virus with a definition, you'll have no issues removing. If its new or a variant, first thing to do is start looking in the registry at the windows run and runonce keys to see how it's starting up as well as other place (forget off the top of my head) where apps can list themselves to load on start up. Good luck!

Try running system restore, and rolling back to a time before he nuked your pc. Also turn off restart on error on your bootup, so you can find out the blue screen your getting and give us that information and we will try to help you.

A few common things to try when your not booting to windows is test the memory with MemTest86, and also try running a chkdsk /r, if you have a corrupt startup file that should fix it.

Let us know how those go.

Dunno what virus. Thats the first problem, spybot is scanning now, but I only have access to one core. Whatever it is it's messed with the booting sequence.

Don't do that. Just tell him that it broke your video card and you need $300 to replace it.

Spybot and AVG are good, but if they dont find something try these two also. They are both free downloads.

SuperAntiSpywareRemover
A Squared Free

If your scans do produce anything follow their directions for removing the badies then run a reg cleaner to make sure nothing is left behind. Here are 2 free ones also.

CCleaner
Windows Registry Repair

After all of that reboot and do it again just to make sure.
