1. For the sake of it being a 64 bit OS I heard that gives it more security right there.
2. Windows firewall seems to work well for me. For an aftermarket firewall I would take Zonealarm free edition. If it supports x64 that is.

I would necessarily say peer guardian is a firewall program. It does provide more security as it is an IP blocking program, but it does not do everything a firewall does.

Do you have a router between you and the internet, because if you configure that properly there is no need to have a software based firewall. All they do is suck up resources and bug you by asking you if you want to allow programs to connect online.
__________________I do tech support for Dell, and see far too often that people can not connect online because they denied IE access to the internet. I would just suggest using the router and the Windows firewall, that is more protection than you'll need, and won't slow you down to much.
