I read somewhere that HP says ready boost is a waste of time and your better off putting more RAM in your machine anyway!

Well if they sell their crappy systems with 1gb to unaware consumers and put vista on it, readyboost would probably be beneficial to them. Especially since HP would charge them 10x the price of a stick for an extra gig of ram.
They shouldnt even sell systems with low amounts of ram and Vista on them to begin with.

Its not a waste of your time. Benefits have been proven by many, though most of the time it isn't noticable.

But what happens if you've got 2GB RAM with a 32bit OS and want to go a little more on the cheap? ReadyBoost the is the best option.

ReadyBoost is excellent, and this is discussed in detail in my sticky thread/guide. Rep+ for the nice formatting of the info, Omega.... I am going to add it to my tweak guide, if that's cool with you

Ok - I think this needs a bump as I see alot of misunderstanding/arguements surrounding superfetch lately.

For the record...I have noticed the advantages of 2gb readyboost in 64 bit systems with quads and 8gb of ram, also on my current rig. The USB 2.0 interface allows for blazing fast cache interface (480 Mbps capable)

Here's a nice Wiki nugget:
Quote:
Using ReadyBoost-capable flash memory (NAND memory devices) for caching allows Windows Vista to service random disk reads with performance that is typically 80-100 times faster than random reads from traditional hard drives. This caching is applied to all disk content, not just the page file or system DLLs
and:
Quote:
Microsoft has stated that a 2:1 compression ratio is typical, so that a 4 GB cache could contain upwards of 8 GB of data.
