How do you remove Windows Update Agent?
I have some issues connecting and staying connected through windows update, and I heard the only way to fix this is to reinstall the Agent. I tried just running the install but it told me the Agent was already installed.

After googling I can't find anything on uninstalling it, I belive it is a core part of windows.
I'd say deal with it or reformat.

Well, in XP. Right click my computer -> Automatic Updates tab -> turn off automatic updates. Nothing like that in vista?

I don't think hes wanting to turn off updates, hes wanting to reinstall the entire windows update program.

I heard that there is a file (C:/Windows/winsxs/pending.xml) that can cause issues loosing connections to the MS update server. Reinstalling the Windows Update Agent would fix that, however I believe I have to delete it first.
Pending.xml does not show up for me unfortunately. Original problem is that I will loose connection either looking for updates, or downloading the updates, and I get Error code: 80073712. MS Help is useless as it says I need to enter credentials, despite the fact that I am on a wired connection. Could just be my school's connection, heavily filtered/throttled.

Removing windows update is a real pain, but it can be done. First, disable BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) and Windows Update using services.msc; then, remove the registry keys for local machine and current user for software > M$ and Windows that applies to upd, update service, BITS Vista, winsxs, etc. As for reinstalling, I don't know.... maybe rewrite the registry manually? Check M$ for a stand-alone installer? Check update.microsoft.com after it is uninstalled, and see what it says to do?

Alright, I have the standalone installer.
Disabled the Windows update service, there was no BITS. Can't seem to find any of the stuff in the registry, but I will keep hunting.

If you want to repair Windows update agent. You don't need to remove it first. You can force the installation of the current version.
You need to download the current Windows Update Agent from MS. Save it and then use the run command from start menu. Use /wuforce as the control switch (make sure you put a space between the file location and the switch). |
