Default Vista vs XP 3dmark06 scores

Hello,

I can see from other members of the form that their 3dmark06 score in XP is higher than in Vista. Does this mean that I will lose FPS(frames-per-second) in games, or game quality in general, if I decide to switch to Vista from XP?

I have xp 32bit now and probably in a year or so might need more ram, so will want to switch to vista 64.

To utilise 4GB you will need to get a 64Bit OS regardless, but Vista performance is slowly getting as good as XP. You notice drops in benchies, but gaming it's only a small drop.

Great, that's what I was looking for, I really don't care if my 3dmark score goes down, just as long as game performance is not hindered much.

Game performance IS hindered, sometimes significantly depending on the game. If your 3dmark score goes down a couple K, you can bet your bottom dollar you are going to lose noticeable performance in your games.

The best OS to use is XP x64. Fully 64-bit, 128gb of ram support, uses the most stable windows kernel (server 2003) and is the best OS you can currently get.

Umm, wow.....
Care to back up your information on how game performance is much more hindered in Vista than it is in XP?

oh crap! this is going to turn into a vista vs xp thread.

In benchmarks only a couple hundred points is going to be lost depending on your card but in gaming maybe you'll loose only 3-7 frames, or you will increase 3-7 frames. Its all depending on the game and the card.
So with your card, you're not going to notice any difference in gaming.

I took these a couple days ago. Exact same setup for each test, both OS's have the latest 8800GT Video Drivers, both OS's have all available updates installed. Both are fresh installs with nothing but 3DMark06 and a screenshot program installed. There are no differences between the two test setups other than the OS's.

Windows XP Pro x64 - 11,699

Windows Vista Home Basic - 11,435

Only a 264 point difference. I have barley noticed any difference in FPS with vista in BF2, CSS, HL2, and Oblivion. Vista has DX10 and will only get better with time as Microsoft releases more updates, eventually Microsoft will stop releasing updates for XP.

Generally correct, though with a bit of a spin to suggest that people's performance will drop "a couple K". Perhaps it's happened, but I've not seen it and especially not with a rig like the OP has. XP x64 / Server 2003 are great OS's, without a doubt. But, the blanket statement you ended with takes something otherwise insightful and turns it somewhat fanboyish.

It varies between OSes because of the driver coding and such.

I exaggerated, yes. But then again, for whatever reason, OCN has some nasty Vista fetish *shudders*.

Thus, it is quite hard to be a supporter of a different OS here if you remain quieter and only give occasional light information.

$10 says that if I were an adamant Vista supporter my rep would be going up every day.
