Since when is $110 too much for an OEM version of Vista Home Premium? $50-60 for The Orange Box is too expensive?

Also, don't you have to do BitLocker on the files you want encrypted?
You're right:
"BitLocker is only available in the Enterprise and Ultimate editions of Windows Vista."

But I thought that BitLocker was on by default-- in which it encrypts your entire volume (all the data that is on the volume).

It's just a point of clarification in case you use those operating systems and you need data off the drive(s). Professional forensics people can get past all that without too much trouble, but for someone that does not have that experience, it's not easy.

Quote:
Nevertheless, in February 2008, a group of security researchers published details of a straightforward cold boot attack that allows a Bitlocker-protected machine to be compromised by booting the machine off a USB device into another operating system, then dumping the contents of pre-boot memory.[8] The attack relies on the fact that DRAM retains information for up to several minutes (or even longer if cooled) after power has been removed. Use of a TPM module does not offer any protection, as the keys are held in memory while Windows is running, although using TPM together with a PIN offers better protection. Similar full disk encryption mechanisms of other vendors and other operating systems, including Linux and Mac OS X, are vulnerable to the same attack.[8] The authors recommend that computers be powered down when not in physical control of the owner (rather than be left in a "sleep" state) and that a PIN also be required to boot the machine.

I've dual-booted XP Pro and Vista Ultimate, when I was booted in XP, I could access my Vista files fine. I haven't used Vista in forever (won't be able to until I get my P4 machine up and running again) but I'll try that out and see how it goes.

How about just calling Microsoft and have them activate your supposedly legitimate copy of Vista? I don't see the point of this sorry.

With Vista I just used windows +r to bring up a run window or used less functionality, right click to explore or open windows and that would let me copy things I sent to one of my computers on my network. worked like a charm.

Smile 4 me ubuntu was a solution

I was lucky that I had an empty partition on my Thinkpad laptop (you know they don't have a Windows Key). I installed ubuntu with mount points for root (/), home (/home), Windows C and D (/Windows/C) (/Windows/D). C is in NTFS but should not be formatted during the installation. D is in FAT32, also doesn't need formatting. Home and root are in ext3.... Then, after installation I was able to access Windows data from Ubuntu Linux and copy for example (from and) to a memory stick. I was very happy. Probably the whole thing would even work with a live CD of ubuntu. I didn't try out since I need Linux anyway (not every program runs on Windows, he, he, )
