is there anyway to covert a word 2000 or 2003 (i dont know which) document to a word 97?

Have you tried "Save As"? If that doesn't work, go to OpenOffice.org and download their client. Then, open the Word 2003 file in Open Office, and save it as Word '97.

well i have word 97 and ive been sent a doc by somebody (wps) and when i open it it looks like
a load of ys and random symbols
