Default Black screen? WTH?

Ok installed Linux Fedora, liked it but need Windows. So pop in Windows XP cd, it boots and after it says Inspecting computers hardware bam! black screen, any ideas why? Specs are Athlon 64 X2 4200+, 2gb ram, 535watt PSu, 7600GS, mobo is an ECS NFORCE4MA. Linux worked fine and loaded fine why wont windows?

did you reformat the hdd before trying to install windows?
