Default xp loading annoyance

I just recently cleaned up a friend of mine's computer as he had alot of viruses and spyware. Well, after the computer is turned on, and the windows xp screen pops up (with the little loading bar), it shows up kind of dimmed out for a short time (maybe 3-4 seconds) and then the loading bar starts. I was just wondering if anyone knows why this is. His computer is some manufactured brand - "great quality" brand.

thanks
