Default Reformating Vista and Running Backup to Restore Files

With the SP1 out for Vista out, I was thinking about doing a reformat of my system this weekend, as I've had it for about 6 months. I already backup all of my documents, music, etc. on another drive, so could I reformat my OS disk, reinstall all of the drivers (sigh...), and then run the Backup Utility to restore all of my documents?

I mean, the backup files are essentially compressed files, nothing less, am I correct? I will manually move over all of my really important files to the other drive, just to be sure, but I was looking for the fastest method for getting my files back on my 'puter.

Thanks
