there is a Beta RC out (or whatever its called)
just general preference/if you've noticed any speed improvements, gaming experience, application errors, etc.

im not trying to start any kind of Vista Vs. XP thread, but simply the effects of the recent service packs that have come out (vista sp1, xp sp3)

I have both XP and Vista installed. I find that I can navigate Vista much faster, but XP is faster for barebone apps.

I haven't used XP in a while though, has SP3 been released?

I love Vista over XP, but I picked the SP3 simply because I would imagine after 2 SP's, the 3rd would have to be pretty well done. Sure SP1 for Vista did it's job, but it's still a work in progress IMO. I guess the word "better" could be relative.

Is there any significant differences between the final SP3 version and my Win XP SP 3 v.3244? I am contemplating if I should update it as well but would like some input on the benefit over v.3244.

I vote for vista because a lot of my drivers work better on Vista... SP1 was just more frosting for my chocolate cake!
Well for me, 2GB is plenty. The only reason I use around 1.5GB or more sometimes is because I fold on all 4 cores, haha.

There was this one time where I was trying to install the Ccrysis demo, and for some reason the unpacking at the beginning used up all 2GB, lol. My computer lagged SO much! It really sucked.

There may have been something wrong with the install file, since it was such a big download.

I would love to have 8GB, but I don't really need it, although I want it!

Vista uses more memory if you have more memory.

If you have 2GB you will see about 1.5GB use. If you have 4GB you will see around 2.5GB. If you have 8GB, you will see around 3.5GB of normal memory use.

No, I don't see 1.5GB use at "idle", only when I'm doing a lot of different things, including gaming, so that could be any amount.

You are right though, it does use more memory if you have more, as far as i know. However, it's not like it's slow with 2GB. I guess having more would just allow it to cache like every possible program.

That's the only single problem I found with your great list of vista's features. I still don't find windows reliable for checking the reliability of my computer and diagnosing problems and that kind of stuff.

But if you guys feel it's working - more power to you.

That about sums up my feelings. Vista seems to be much better at desktop work; it can get desktop work done a lot faster via navigation. XP is just better at raw performance (Super Pi, games, other number-crunching apps.)

Just meet the RAM requirement (have at least 2GB, really), and vista is great.
