i hav a xp x64 OS, havent get vista x64 probably next month. my question is: is my xp x64 utilizes 4Gb of ram? im planning to upgrade to 4gigs.

If the question is whether Vista x64 supports 4GB of ram then the answer is a yes. When it does come to build day, install two gigs of ram and download a particular hotfix that allows more ram, then install the other two gigs.

Xp 64 can utilize 4gigs of ram no problem, I think thats what you were asking.

I thought it was 86 that needed the hotfix?
x64 automaticaly detects up to 128gb (or is it more?) of memory.

I think it's 128. I've never had a problem except with 16 bit applications in XP x64. I've seen it support 8 out of the box. Seeing as how the infastrcture is based on the Windows Server 2003 x64 (I think) And they didn't remove the massive amount of ram support the server apps have.

nope, vista x64 still needs a hotfix to boot with 4GB of RAM. Or you could just install SP1, which includes the hotfix. As for your other question, yes, 64bit can theoretically support 128GB if you have it .

oh okey thanks, just kinda doubtful on my xp x64..

a follow-up question: which is best an xp 64 or vista 64? as of now im using xp64 and it worked fine ran my CAD, 3dsMax (im kinda into rendering works), COD4, Crysis. works just fine for me but im still wanting the vista64, it is the future right? so which is batter an xp64 or vista64?

OK, thats good to know since I am installing Vista x64 with 4 gigs of RAM ( I have SP1 downloaded though). Shoud I install Vista with 2 gigs then run either the Hotfix or SP1 then put the other 2 in, or can I just leave all 4 in and after the hotfix/SP1 install it will see it?
So all I need is 4 32 gb sticks of memory for 128 gb?

Go with Vista x64. Like you said, it is the future.

If SP1 is included in your install it will work fine, although I didn't know they had that out on discs yet. Otherwise, you should install it with 2 gigs, get all the updates (including SP1) and then put the other 2 gigs in. I would vote for that idea either way, just to be safe (no that you'll hurt anything if you don't.)

I personally prefer XP x64 just because of the amount of custimization and control I can enforce over it. Personally I'm not going to bother with vista until they force me to. If there's one good thing that vista gave me, its further support for XP x64.

Add: I've also had more compatibility issues with Vista then with Linux which is rare. I can't get vista to do a darn thing with some programs and I just refuse to use it.
