Default Frozen system I give up

I have serious issues with my system freezing it happens at all kinds of times whether 1 minute after booting up or sometimes an hour later. Upon restarting the system i occassionaly get a disk read error. Action taken so far includes formatting and reinstallation of windows which stopped the problem for 1 day. Purchase of a new raptor hard drive that solved the problem for only 2 days. Purchase of new keyboard and mouse after having the keyboard not function properly after a few bootups. The problem continues to persist after last nights bootup Sata port 6 which my Cdrom is on detects itself as "x$%%^*$" just tons of garbled characters. If anyone knows or can suggest what my problem maybe or perhaps offer some troubleshooting tips I will not throw my rig out the window. Could it be windows?

My rig consists of a Q6600, EVGA680i A1, 2gb crucial ballitix, 8800gtx, auzentech sound card, raptor 150gb hd

Is the southbridge heatsink getting very hot at all? Could be something as simple as over-heating.
