Hey, my dad just got a new ipod classic 80gb and he synced it orignally with a computer that runs Windows XP Pro and now on his new laptop Windows Vista (32bit version) it asks to reformat it except of course we don't want it to do that.
I've tried running some google searchs but nothing turns up on it. Can anyone please help? EDIT: The same happens with his new removeable harddrive. Cheers, Voice.

Has he run Windows update? There was a Vista issue back when it was first released which nuked iPods. I'm pretty sure this was corrected by a Windows patch.

Yeah.

I downloaded the fix and when it ran it said "The update does not apply to your system".

I know that iPods can only be connected to one computer at a time. It's kind of like a marriage. When you synch your iPod on one computer and then try synching it with another, it will divorce from the first computer and synch to the 2nd. In doing so, it will wipe the current library and load the one on the new computer.
So, best bet is to backup the iTunes library and restore it on the new computer. Then try synching. EDIT: I should mention that I just upgraded my wife's computer to Vista from XP and had to do this. She hasn't tried synching since the upgrade, though, but we did the backup and restore thing.

I don't think that what was suggested is the problem, because Vista wants to reformat my dads removeable harddrive too, and my dad can use his ipod fine on my pc (which isn't what he originally used to put music on it).
Keep the suggestions coming, thanks for the help so far. ![]()

what about the file system on the hard disk? it could be fat 32 and windows could be trying to get it to NTFS.

I thought about that too, but Windows supports FAT32 doesn't it?
