Vista 64-bit. You will regret going 32-bit if you ever get 4GB of ram.

It costs about the same.

You can still run those 32-bit programs. X64 has the future. Here's some more 64-bitness for you http://www.start64.com/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/64-bit

32bit apps run slower in a 64bit environment, but thats really about the only disadvantage with vista 64, generally anything that doesn't work in vista 64 won't work in vista 32 either.

64-bit may have some program compability issues, but they are being fixed rather fast and it can be hard to find a program that won't work in 64-bit. The more people that start using 64-bit OSes, the faster it will become mainstream and the faster the issues will be worked out. Sorry, thats not true anymore.. It might have been when 64-bit first came out. 32bit applications also have a slight performance increase under 64-bit OSes depending on the application.

I don't think programs run slower (hadn't heard or seen that) but there are some compatibility issues with driver signing, but nothing that can't be gotten around.
If you ever get more than 4gb of ram, then go with 64bit

Driver signing is a Vista deal, not the x64 part (althoug I have never had a problem).
__________________As everybody else has said, go x64. Ability to use more RAM, more secure, support is just as good as 32 bit, 32 bit still works under it (but 16 bit does not, but if your still using 16 bit software, you don't need a new computer).

Very few programs won't run under x64, and you could always dual boot
With 8 gigs of ram there are no programs that run slower in x64, and most run much faster (since win xp x86 can't use over 3.5 gigs of ram)
