There is a limit. You would have to look at the License is you paid for (the part of the install processor that you agree to obey). Some License let you install it on a Desktop computer AND a Laptop Computer. Some Allow for just two computers, some just one.So you have to check.

How do you check the license before purchasing?

Are you building the computers for yourself or other people? Retail licenses are for personal use only. OEM licenses are for system builders. So if you are building five systems for different people, each person will require their own license, and OEM would suffice for that while saving a little money on multiple purchases.
Second question, if they are all for you, will they all be running and online at the same time? Someone correct me if I'm wrong or this only applies to OEM, but I think if multiple instances of the same license are online, it will alert Microsoft, and you might get in trouble. Hope that helps!

Then you need 3 licenses.

If it's the same as XP was, if you are using an already active key on a new install, it will give you 30days to register Windows with an unused key until it blocks you out.

I knew these were the rules for OEM, I wasn't sure about Retail. So DuckieHo, are they the same or is Anth0789 right and you can run on up to two systems, like a Laptop and Desktop with retail?

Retail = one machine at any given time. I have never heard of a single license that would allow a laptop and desktop. That just doesn't make sense since how would an OS know the difference? Also, how do you define a desktop vs laptop (vs desktop replacement, netbook, UMPC, HTPC, server, etc)?
