Recently built a new gaming pc (my sig rig), and was wondering if I should put it in standby when not in use or power off. I've always just put my dell in standby but now that I have more high-end components I am a little more concerned about how to take care of them better. Sorry for the noob ?

It depends.

I rather turn off the computer completely if I am away for many hours (sleeping). But for like 30 minutes to an hour idle, I would use standby.

turning on ur computer every half hour or hour is not good, its actually better to leave the pc on then to constantly turn it on and off, i would say for 0-2 hours leave it on but if you leave for more than 3 hours turn it off

Is it the myth that says your computer dies faster every time you boot up the PC because more electricity is used when you turn it on than when you leave it on?

no, not really turning in ur pc puts stress on it much more than if its idiling, along with the stress the temp changes also arent that good on the part, but im sure tunring it off uses less electricity than letting it idle

It puts stress on the hard-drives, by having to spin them up to speed constantly ... but it is really negligible unless you power on/off/on/off in very short intervals of time...

Between 02-05 I always put my old dell PC in standby when not using it. If it was any less than an hour or so I would just leave it on. All other times, it was in standby. Then for the last 2.5-3 years, I ran a CS server on that same comp and it was on 24hrs a day -- never had any issues to this day. It still runs as a dedicated CS server 24/7 with real-time priority. I prefer to take better care of my new setup and would like to know which method would be easier on my components.

I recall reading a while back that constant power-ups can put more stress on the parts over just putting it in a standby mode. Probably a myth.

I always put my pc into standby. It is bad to keep turning it on and off. I turn it on in the morning and just leave it on until night. Then i put it into standby and maybe ever two weeks i completely turn it off for a day. That's how i do it
