What's special about Windows Server Standard 2008? What do they do differently that would affect a desktop user? The reason I ask is that they have a demo that lasts 240 days.
Edit: Oh yah and what about Enterprise? Is it any better as a desktop?

Well, Server is configured to be a server. It is locked down more, and I believe has IIS and other servers installed by default. As far as differences to a desktop user, it would just be more annoying to configure things as a desktop/workstation. Why would you want to use Server as a desktop OS?

@Battista: agreed, but IIS is disabled last time I checked.
@Gauvenator: with that kinda rig I would def. upgrade to Vista x64

Would the server version be suitable? I've been wanting Vista x64, as I've heard they've improved it a bunch over XP x64.

I believe Server 2k8 will be a waste of your time, unless your a die hard developer. edit: Windows Server 2008 Standard costs ~$999, so figure http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserv...s/pricing.aspx

Doesn't Vista have a 30/60 day trial version for free before you have to activate it?

Enterprise can be used in a cluster, Other then that, some games don't like to be installed because server isn't listed as a option, DOOM 3. Other then at Server has tons of options for services that no typical user will use or shouldn't. Along time ago i had server 2000 as my O/S "at that time same as 2000 pro with more options" Why do you ask?

Sooo...I'm trying to install the trial, but I'm having issues with partitioning. Does Vista have to be on a specific partition on a disk? Iirc, Xp needed to be on the first partition of the first harddrive. Does the same go for Vista?
