I have Vista x64 and I allocated 40GB to my first partition and I've just ran out of room. My second partition still has plenty of room left so I was wondering if I could start installing games and programs on that partition? Would that work?

I'd also re-locate the page file to that partition while you're at it.

Windows has a 'page file' which functions as extra memory when you run out of RAM. Generally, it takes up a couple of GB on your HDD.

Go to 'Control Panel', and double click on 'System'. From the menu on the left, select 'Advanced system settings'. Click the 'settings' button under the 'Performance' header. Then, click the 'Advanced' tab. Click the 'Change...' button under 'Virtual memory'.

Uncheck 'Automatically manage paging file size for all drives'. Then, with C: selected, check the 'No paging file' radio button, and hit the 'Set' button to the right. Then, select D:, and check the 'Custom size' radio button. In the 'Initial Size' and Maximum size' boxes, enter 2048 (enough for nearly any situation). Click that 'Set' button again, and then hit ok. You'll be prompted for a reboot. Do reboot, and you're done.

One question though, why set it to exactly 2048 though? What if I put in like 3000 just to be safe?

With 4GB RAM you can theoretically disable it. I choose 2048, since that's exactly 2GB and more than plenty. I cannot think of any multitasking that will take up 6GB RAM (4GB Physical, and 2GB virtual)

the generally accepted page file size is 1.5x you ram, but since you already have 4GB, 2048 should be good

i actually read on TweakGuides that Windows doesn't function properly without some kind of page file. of course, that was for XP, i don't know about Vista. you might wanna check on that.

I would disable it, 4 GB should be plenty and you are running 64 bit, so you can take advantage of it.

With no need of a page file, it will prolly just slow you down. Thinking that it needs to store swap data on the hard drive and that just sucks performance out of the hole.

I currently have about 8 Harddrives/Partitions, installed, and 3 out of the 8 have programs and games installed. It should work fine as long as you point shortcuts to the specific path they are located in.

My comment about disabling the page file was 'THEORETICALLY'.

In practical temps: Don't do it. There are indeed some applications that search for a page file (Photoshop!). Since you have enough space on the D:, there is no reason to disable it.
