If you have another computer hook the hard drive to it and pull over the documents you need to the other computer and format & reload your vista machine.
Vista has a unfortunate side of not having a true Windows repair feature which I find crazy but what can you do....

If you REALLY want your data, you'll go buy a laptop connecter to IDE adapter. You can find them online for dirt cheap or get one at bestbuy probably. I use them everyday at work and they are safe and realiable if you handle them and take precaution making sure you don't squeeze your hard drive and stuff cause they are sensative.

If your laptop is new and has a SATA connecter you won't need a adapter. You can simply connect it with a SATA transfer and power cable from your desktop..IF it supports sata atleast.
