I'm considering switching to 64, but my concern is the programs I have, will they work in 64. Most importantly games. Will 32bit programs run in the 64bit enviornment?

What other downsides are there?

To be honest, not many IMO. I switched to 64-bit Vista with Service Pack 1 recently, and haven't had a single issue with any game or program/utility. Everything runs excellently. I highly recommend it.
