Ok im am doing some contracting work for a LAN center in which they get a PC that is "messed up" and i come in and fix it and we split the profits.
__________________First question is this is it unethical & illegal to install free anti-virus programs on there machines such as AVG or Avast. 2nd question what are some of the tools and routines you guys use to diagnose and fix a pc's problems. Im not saying i never have fixed a computer i just never done it to a strict protocol . also im looking for some handy apps to put on a flash drive. Thanks for your help in advance guys!

Well, I know at least with Avast's free license, they say you can only use it for personal/home use, so you are going against their EULA.So you're saying it's fine to use software for free which you should be paying for? I don't think that's how it works.

It's fine, you are providing a service = money.

Make sure the owner of the PC signs that the PC was damaged and any further data lost will not be your fault, also make sure to include in the contract that you have full permission to access their hard drive and the data on it.
If this is owned by a business make the owner sign it, if it is a personal computer, then make the computer owner sign it. This will absolve you from any fault should you have to nuke the drive, or you find inappropriate material on the drive.

Contact the makers of the free programs. You may be able to get a commercial license (to install it on any computers) for a nominal fee. Then it's perfectly legal.
