Default SP3 Performance Increase?

Well my dad got some files sent to him from my sailing coach about regatta's (.docx, Vista files I believe) and he needed SP3 to open them. Now his laptop SUCKS... Literally you spend more time for it to load things then you can actually use it...

Specs:
Celeron @ 2.67
256MB of RAM (Unknown speed) only 192MB usable because of memory dedicated to graphics.

Now after SP3 was installed and computer restarted... I swear there has been at least a 25% increase in speed... Still unusable by my standards but better...

Soon my new MacBook will be in and he can have my refurbished one.
