Default the update, ironic is it not.

ok where do i start.

uninstalled service pack 3.
windows and a few other things did not work right.
reformatted the HDD.
did a clean install of xp pro with service pack 2.
spent all day reinstaling everything.
lost all of my music.
lost all of my game saves.
lucky that all of my pictures is also on cd's
turned off windows update.
feel like i just got burned by microsoft by updating to service pack 3.
no more updates for me.
need something to eat and take a break away from the pc.
later.

I have installed SP3 on 5 machines so far without a hitch. Put SP3 on before you do anything more to it. Maybe try downloading here instead of using windows update.

Did you have IE 7 installed already (before the upgrade?)? I had an issue with one of the IE7 updates not installing and causing other problems. I ended up having to un-install IE 7, do the update, then re-install IE7.
Do you have any anti virus turned on? I had an update a while back that would not install because AVG was causing a conflict. I think I turned off both the AV and Firewall.
