Default Windows Repair?

I heard that when you put in a new mobo, or if windows messes up, or its time for that monthly reinstall, you can 'repair' your windows, and that doesn't format your hard drive. My question is: will it remove the programs and/or documents? If so, what should I do to backup the programs in advance...reps will be awarded.

Yes in the restore console type "chkdsk/ r" without "" and there is a space between the / and r.........use it to fix a CURRENT install of windows but I don't know how it will work if you change a MoBo....I cann't answer that part

AND repair "r" will not delete your files

I'd say BACK UP and change the mobo and if you can do it than atleast you have a backup for future use

Well, I'm not sure if it will delete anything (dunno why it would), but you can always just make a partition on your hard drive or mirror it.

ever try and uninstall a program?
well all it does is reinstall the program files...
it leaves all your documents and programs alone...
Itslasher is right... making a backup CD is always a plus...
you shouldnt run into any problems

EDIT:

I didnt finish my thought...
when you try and uninstall a program it'll ask if you want to repair...
lol
I didn't put that in SRY

Yes it can be done. If you are changing your mobo and you can, put your windows cd in the cd drive before you shut down, swap out the mobo and turn on the system but do not let it boot, it probably would not anyway but dont let it even if you have to pull the plug, Get into the bios an make sure all hardware settings are correct or set auto detect, then make sure your cd drive is selected as the first boot device-reboot, when you get to the first setup window do not select recovery console just hit enter for normal setup then more files will load and the second window comes up select "R" in this window to repair an existing windows installation, You will have to reactivate and reinstall any service packs but all your data should remain intact.

I was gonna suggest that, but I wasn't sure if that was what he was asking for. But hey, every little bit helps!

If you are unning windows XP there is no problem at all in changing the Mobo. It will know that you changed it and you will not lose any files. I have changed mine two times now with now problem. There is also a repair in xp so you don't lose files. I had to repair mine a few mouths back and it still running fine. Good luck
