Default Question about OEM windows

Can OEM versions be "upgraded" to a newer version of windows?

Say I have an OEM windows XP installed.
Can I buy a Windows Vista Ultimate upgrade edition and use that on my OEM windows?

Yeah, I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work.

Then the resulting upgraded vista... will that be considered OEM or retail?

I never figured that one out. It comes in a box, so I would have to say it's retail, meaning you can upgrade your board and whatnot... But then again, it's essentially running "on" that OEM windows, which is stuck to the board...

Hooray for windows and the superior, simplistic, easy-to-understand, consumer-friendly licensing system.

Its considered retail if you purchased it in a retail package. The one thing I have discovered doing numerous vista upgrades in the shop is that is will not install unless you have a valid copy of windows installed on the hard disk. It won't ask you to just insert your old cd like previous versions of windows.

I think you can still use the upgrade disk to do a clean install if even an unactivated install of XP or something exists on the HDD.

Good question on the OEM to retail upgrade though.

Yes you can do a clean install without activating the old xp. I do it all the time. It use to be when you are upgrading. It will ask you to put the old os in the drive just to see if you have it.

I'm surprised it's not answered on BFRD's OEM clarification thread.

We need to deploy someone to m$ headquarters and demand an explanation.
