Default Duel Boot, back to single OS

Hi, have Vista and XP installed and want to go back to just XP. So what i want to know is, do i need to take both of them off and start again. Or can i just formate the drive where the OS is that i dont want?
Or should i delete the partition, yes they are both on one drive, partitioned!
Thanks
Gary

Depends slightly on what bootloader you use.

If you just use the windows one you should be able to goto the root of your main drive (c and see a file called boot.ini (if not, show hidden system files in view options) and remove the line for whichever OS you have. Then after that you can delete/clear the partition and use it for data, or use a program like Partition Magic and join it back to your main partition.

Default Better of reformatting

If you can backup all the stuff you want to keep, I would suggest just reformatting the whole drive. In my experience there seem to be less complications when start from scratch.

If not then good luck finding all the files that windows hides all over your drive. It can be a difficult process.

Easiest thing to do is:
1) Backup all your needed files
2) Insert your CD for the OS you want to install
3) Delete both partitions; they will automatically merge together
4) Install your new OS
