Default Windows XP/Vista 64-bit... Isn't it really 37-bit?
Ok, so I know 64-bit versions of Vista and XP support 128 GB of RAM. But, 2^64 is 18 446 744 073 709 551 616 bytes, or 17 179 869 184 GB.

128GB is 2^37(=137438953500 bytes, or 128GB).

So 64-bit windows is really just 37-bit?
Or are you telling me the OS reserves 17 179 869 056 GB for other stuff?

It is a software limit put on by MS, since all 64 bit vista versions support different amounts of memory, Basic (8gb), Premium (16gb) and Ultimate (128gb).

The emergence of the 64-bit architecture effectively increases the memory ceiling to 2^64 addresses...

The limitation is within the OS; different versions of Vista for instance, support difference amounts of RAM.

But why actually limit it on the Ultimate version? Ok, so I see that 17 million terabytes is the tiniest bit overkill, but you did pay for 64-bit. Not that the 64-bit version of XP is more expensive than the 32-bit one, but drivers may cause trouble.
