I sold my friend a computer with Win XP 32 bit OS and everything was fine when I gave it to him. Now he goes and buys a little 2.1 Speaker setup and There is no sound at all from Speakers or headphones.
__________________I looked in Device manager for any thing out of the ordinary and I only saw on Yellow Question mark. I have no clue how to fix this problem. I looked in the control panel under the Sounds tab and I could not adjust anything in there. Everythng was greyed out, Why is that. And how do I fix it. Hey is very upset. When you play a song using VLC or Windows media player it shows that a song is playing but no sound. I tried put hooking the headphones in all the jacks in back and front of computer and still no luck. Can someone please help me fix this issue???

Uninstall the drivers, reinstall the drivers for the card from CD.. if that doesnt work make sure the sound card is inserted properly.. Make sure the sound isnt on mute either lol i've had that happen to me a few times.. Try seeing if the sound works without the speakers, speakers could be faulty also so try with and without!

Also go into control pannel and click on Sounds and Audio Devices. Select the Audio Tab and make sure the default Sound Playback default device is the sound card. Some programs (like faxes and modems) may change this.

Did you install a soundcard, or are you using the onboard audio?
__________________If you are using a soundcard, visit the website of the manufacturer and download the correct drivers. If you are using onboard, put the motherboard CD into your CD drive and install the drivers that are on there.

Please don't laugh but it is a dell. My first computer from two years ago. So it has on board audio.
__________________So I don't have a cd for the card to uninstall the drivers from. If I have to I will do a re format but there must be a easier way to fix it. I did look in the control panel under sounds and devices and every thing is grayed out in the audio section. I also made sure it is using the default sound is on default.

Visit Dell's website, select your system, and you'll be able to download the audio drivers for the computer. Until the drivers are installed, and your computer restarted, you will not be able to change anything in the control panel regarding the system sounds.
