Assuming the thing is connected to the internet, if it had a virus on it, someone could access not just one computer's files, but every computer's files.

Do you use your machine to access the Internet? If so, your machine is a MUCH greater risk. Also, the server doesn't have execution rights like that on clients.

so in addition to that, is there a way to make it update only certain files on individual computers? Like if my mom downloads music I would like to update that every night, but if my sister does reports as well I'd like to be able to back up those files.
__________________And another question... when it backs up things it will update them, like replace only the things that are different. Well can I back up documents in all of their individual forms? Like, if I write a report one night and then edit it another night and then another night later I decide I like the original copy more, can I access all versions of that individual document? Iunno how specific or advanced the backup utility is in the WHS program. Does that make sense? Essentially can it act like the shadow copy from Vista Ultimate/time machine...

Ahh, so you can't use the server as a normal OS? It's basically just a dedicated server with no monitor or keyboard or anything, then?

It's a solid home server OS,I switched to it after my family complained that Suse was to much of a hassle to use.Get the trial cd and try it out.
