I feel ignored ._.
Does anyone know how Windows will detect a mobo switch even if the new mobo is EXACTLY the same model and make as the previous one?

I'm not interested in breaking the law here
(If I was, I wouldn't have bought my copy of Windows)
I'm just curious as to how it detects such a thing ._.

I am not sure, but I suspect it is a combination of items, such as model number and/or bios revision. According to a MS rep that I spoke to specifically about OEM usages, he said that if a manufacturer replaces a motherboard due to a covered defect, the OEM license will transfer to the replacement.

I have wondered that myself. When they are different, that is easy, when they are the same board, I am guessing there is some type of serial codes or something it looks at on certian parts.
The one that worked fine for me was when I had bought 2 identical boards at the same time, installed Xp Pro on the HDD, then hooked it up to the other MoBo, but now that I think about it, that was a retail version of XP.

But if it's an exact same mobo

Like P35-DS3L -> P35-DS3L, shouldn't the model number and BIOS rev be the same too?
(Assuming they're both made at similar times)

But individual parts on the board also have their own identifiers. and whos to say they used brand "X" for this little part today, then brand "Y" for it tomorrow.

There is also likely a serial number. Many peices of computer equipment have unique serial numbers that are specific to that device. Another thought might be the MAC address of the network adapater that is common to almost all modern motherboards. There are many different options that MS could use to determine a different motherboard.
