Ok, this may seem elementary but believe it or not, I've never "upgraded" an OS, I've always installed full versions.
So, my "dumb" question is, if I run a Vista upgrade on a machine with XP, does Vista preserve all the files and programs already installed in the xp partition? I would assume no but I figured I'd ask anyway. Just need to know because if it does preserve all the information, I'll have to reinstall xp first to wipe everything clean as I don't want all the old programs, etc. ![]()

It will place the old xp in a file called window.old. Now will it preserve all folds I don't know. I know the vista 32 bit I had to have xp installed with the upgrade.

Vista, like Dan said, will move everything to a windows.old folder. However, it also attempts to move your installed programs too. When I did this when Vista first released, it was a mess. I eventually ended up doing a fresh install. Since then software/hardware support is very different so it may be better. The other annoying thing you'll need to learn about taking ownership and control of folders/files on Vista otherwise once you are done with the windows.old folder, it's not an easy delete and is just eating space.
In all honesty, back up anything important and do a fresh install. It's always the best idea IMO.

Hmm. Ok, is there a way to prevent Vista from creating this windows.old folder?
Lappy needs a reformat and fresh start; not to mention, its 55 of 60bg full.

Once you have done the upgrade you can just delete the windows.old folder and the space will become available again. That's what did on a friends pc.

Are you just doing an upgrade because you don't have a full version DVD?

You might start to back up what ever data you have. It will take like 10-11 gigs after updates. And that is just Vista. You might start to think in getting a bigger drive if you can.
So you might have to uninstall some programs.
