On my mom's computer I can't get it to boot into vista it says please insert operating system disk
__________________So I insert the Vista disk and then it gets to the point where it asks me where I want to install Vista and it doesn't pick up my HDD so I have nowhere to install it I tried making a bootable CD of GParted to wipe the HDD clean then try to install like Ubuntu or something but when I insert that it doesn't do anything Any ideas?

Double check the connections to the hard drive in the computer. Also, is this a new build, or an old one?
What chipset/hard drive type are you using?

is it a sata drive in the hp, or IDE? if sata, you might have to find chipset sata/raid drivers to boot with vista.
it should tell you the chipset when the computer boots, in POST

In vista you will be asked to load drivers, unlike XP where they had to either be on the Install Disk, or loaded Via Floppy with F6
Vista will allow you to insert a CD, so you can either remove the vista one right then and insert a cd with driver burned onto it, or insert and browse to second CD drive if you have one. Can also be USB or Floppy as well |

its an intel 865G chipset and the HDD is IDE...ill check the model tommorow as im too lazy to take apart the computer right now (HDD is under DVD Drive so I'd have to take bezel off and all)

Yes, that will work for vista. But since you just said IDE you have no need for any drivers to get vista installed.
Only SATA drives may need a driver, IDE does not for sure! So, you may either have a Dead Drive, or it could possibly be disconnected from the power, or the IDE ribbon at the drive or the board. Check it all over. You could also possibly have the BIOS boot priority set wrong so look and be sure the drive is listed, enabled, and set as a first or second boot device. |
