How do I check to see whether a password-protected user account has been deleted if its the only account on the os?
Let me clarify: A friend dropped off his machine saying he couldn't access his user profile (the only profile created on the machine - also the admin). If you type an incorrect password, it says so but if the correct password is typed in, I get: The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded elementskater706 was kind enough to pass along this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947215/en-us Say it isn't so, can someone help with this? I've already tried lSofts's Password changer, along with their hdd recover utility, Hiren's boot disk and (thanks to noobdown) Trinity Rescue Kit (a nifty little distro). The files in that profile are critical to my friend (this is a business machine and holds a bunch of data).

Couldn't you put it as a non-boot drive in one of your rigs and recover the data?

This would certainly be the simplest way to recover the data but his OEM Vista disc is gone so I have no way to recover his OS either (without being able to create another account). I will do this if there is no other way, I just hope there is something there to salvage.

I had this problem, tried 1000 fixes and nothing seemed to fix the error. I then, took the files from my user account and put them in another partition and did a clean install (formatting the disk before then installing vista).

Ok, having a hek of a time here. I have the files from that account but now I need to create another account to put them in.
No, I cannot reinstall the os (he's lost his recovery cd's). Anyone have any ideas on how to create a new account. Please remember, I'm locked out of the os and all I can get to is the sign in screen. EDIT: Issue solved. Anyone with similar issues, see this thread for a solution: http://www.overclock.net/intel-mothe...an-t-boot.html
