Hey,
I want to upgrade my Vista 32 bit to Vista 64 bit and I was wondering if their was somewhere i could type my windows code in to get a 64 bit download or disk. Also if I get 64 bit on the same hard drive as the 32 will it wipe everything I had on it: if so is it possible to buy another hard drive and put the 64 bit on there and then somehow transfer all the files from the 32 bit? thanks!

yes you can transfer files from 32 to 64.......i suggest getting another hdd.....after a fresh install copy all your files from the old hdd(32bit) to the new(64bit)...as for the 64bit dvd you'll have to "hunt" down an "iso" image, or contact Microsoft....

HERE is the MS page for going from Vista 32 to Vista 64. It is like $10 for the disk, and is an authentic disk that should have SP1 on it already.

One thing, I am guessing you have an OEM version, since the Retail version of Ultimate come with 32bit and 64 bit DVD's. I don't think you can get a disk from MS for that.

I'm in a somewhat similar situation as OP. I have Vista Ultimate 32 bit OEM; it's a heaping pile of crap. My bluetooth Logitech 5000 kb/mouse drivers totally screwed something up on the system. The Windows Event Log Service - or something like that - no longer works. So, now, it takes my system OVER ONE HOUR to boot up. It's horrible. I'm relegated to browsing the web on my iphone!

Anyway, I've figured this is a good time to move to Vista Ultimate 64.

Can I just purchase a retail Vista Ultimate 64 box and upgrade this system, which is running the Ultimate OEM 32 bit version? I'm backing up valuables, then gonna wipe and do a clean install.

Tips? Comments?

Yeah, you can upgrade 32bit OEM to 64bit Retail.

How long have you put up with that? I would've immediately either reinstalled vista, or would've just gone back to XP.

This the keyboard and mouse are awesome IMO, but the software/drivers are worthless - absolutely worthless. They finally succeeded in making it so that I could no longer do anything with either the KB or the mouse. So, I got my old, wired peripherals and plugged them in. Boot it up, and errors after the hour-long boot.

I have so much music, pictures, and video game files to back up, that I was lazy and just began using my g/f's and work computers instead - for about a month (the computer is only 4-5 months old). Woke up today and thought to myself, "I didn't spend $1700 on an effing computer for it to take space."

So, I'm now backing up, gonna reinstall the OEM Vista, then upgrade it to Vista 64.

What a hassle.

Oh, and gonna get a new KB/mouse combo too.

Splendid.

Tried to upgrade OEM Ultimate 32-bit to RTM Ultimate 64-bit.
- Didn't work.

Tried to upgrade Evaluation Ultimate 32-bit to RTM Ultimate 64-bit.
- Didn't work.


To upgrade Vista to from non-Ultimate 64-bit (i.e., Basic, Home, Business, etc. 32-bit) to Ultimate 64-bit, you don't reboot from the disk; you must launch the install/upgrade process from within the booted, existing OS. The installer, at launch, says, not able to launch from this version of the OS; try booting and installing from the media on the CD. I assume the instructions provided are for RTM - and not OEM - versions of the software. On RTM versions, I'd expect this to work as MS intended.

Luckily, I have a copy of XP Home Edition. I should be able to upgrade to Vista from there, though I'll be nixing my XP product key.

Such a hassle to do something that's essentially so damn simple.
