Default Vista not installing USB storage devices

I have many USB flash drives and 2 USB hard drives. None are working with Vista Home Premium 64 bit. When I plug them in it says "Device Driver software not successfully installed" In device manager, the icon for my USB device has a little yellow exclamation next to it and says "A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)" How can I get this to work? I know it is not a hardware problem, as I am dual booting with XP and it works fine in XP. Ive tried uninstalling it and re installing it, did not help. Please, help me get vista to overcome it's fear of USB mass storage devices!!

Try a different USB port

have you tested those drives under another Vista computer? It could be a random bug in Vista/hardware configuration of the USB device

have you tried just forcing access to the drive after its connected?

reboot your computer too

Have you installed the 780i chipset drivers yet? the drivers will have the USB drivers (I would have thought the SP1 would also). I bet you have the drivers on a USB stick dont you.
