Default Can you test a windows product key before using it?

Ok, here's the deal...I got in on a promotion where M$ gave away a copy of windows ultimate. Turns out it was a retail key. I was gonna use it on a builld I was doing but I got a great deal on a dell 1525.

So I'm trying to sell it to a guy on campus for $65 but he thinks its a pirated serial. Is there a way I can show him its legit without activating it?

Have him pay you 50% up front, and 50% after he activates it.

Did you show him the email(s) you got from Microsoft?

I actually tried something similar to that.

He says he just paid $80 for someone to install XP, and everything was fine til a few days later when he got hit with the WGA.

He's so overly paranoid that he is hard to deal with. I would just throw it on eBay, but can you just sale keys on there?

I didn't show him the e-mail, but I showed him the official mailer it came in. I showed him the windows disc that came with it and he is still thinking I am trying to cheat him. I live no more than 5 doors down. He can always come see me if something goes wrong.

I might be a little intimidating (i'm 6'6", 330lbs) and he's small so that might be an issue.

I don't mean to hijack your thread, but do you know if there is a way to tell if the key is retail or OEM? I have a key from MS giveaway as well but I want to make sure its retail before I install in on my server so it doesn't disable my desktop from being active.

Go to his place and install it and then update/validate it for him and he will see it is valid. Then if he ends up not wanting it, format the drive.

Or you can install at your place with him watching, then show him. And sell to him. It can be used on more then one PC, just not more then one at a time.

He/You may have to call and tell MicroSoft that your PC died and you bought a new one if it gives you activation issues the second time around. This is very simple and takes a few minutes.

You can type it in the windows market place, where you request 64 bit media. When it shows that it's a legit key, and will sell you 64 bit media, that should be enough proof I would think.

Ugh, I hate people like that. Not you OP, the guy you're trying to sell it to. Going off-topic kinda for a moment, I remember striking a deal online a year or so ago with a guy online in Animal Crossing (DS, not Gamecube). He was so paranoid for some reason that I was gonna come into his town and hack him, and he made me promise that I would come visit him every week. It was downright creepy, and needless to say, after we traded the items, I hightailed it out of his town and erased him from my Friend list.

stanrc: alot of people in that thread confirmed it said retail and tested it by setting their system clock passed the 180 day limit. http://www.overclock.net/software-ne...e-free-44.html

The first post on that page is partly proof, but you can read through most of it again to see.
