Default Disk Partitioning & File Organisation.

Hello.
I've been using Vista x64 for a while, and I do quite enjoy it, but I find myself with more and more free time at the moment and nothing to do with it, so i've decided I would like to try Linux.

I've downloaded the Ubuntu 8.04 x64 bit LIVE CD and have used it for a little while although I would now like to install the OS.

I've looked in Disk Management in Vista in order to shrink the current partitions I have (which are as follows C:\ 100GB, D:\ 70GB, G:\ 60GB), however I cannot shrink the partitions as much as I could when I first installed Vista, presumably because files have been stored near the end of the partition and so I now dont have much space to shrink.
Between the partitions I can only free up about 10GB, although between the partitions I actually have about 100GB of space.

So my question is, can I change this? I regularly defragment with a 3rd Part program and hasn't helped too much. I'm now letting the Windows own Disk Defragmenter run but its taking its sweet time and doesn't actually appear to be doing anything! It must be a really slow background program or something.

Any help?

Ok, did u try the Ubuntu partition manager? I think it can shrink Windows partitions as well. It may do a better job than the Vista one.

I also know there are programs you can burn to a bootable disk that will allow you to shrink windows partitions. "GParted" is a example of one such program.

Last, all the programs for Ubuntu are really really tiny files. 10 Gb on Ubuntu is definately doable. (When i had Vista and Ubuntu, I stored all my movies/music on the Vista NTFS partition and accessed them in Ubuntu.)
