Default windows format went bad

So my friend has wanted me to format his pc for awhile..so i backed up all his stuff, formatted it and continued to install XP. I just done it the same way i always do it on my own pc or on anyone elses except this time it went bad. So it copys the files, then restarts, then installs xp. Then it restarts and goes to a black screen with the Xp logo and it says please wait...then the mouse locks up and it wil just sit there for hours without doing anything. tried different CDs and thats it...

his computer was going extremely and i mean extremely slow before the format so thats why he wanted it formatted...so what can i do ? is it is HDD, CPU, Ram or what ?

cheers
Alan

Do you notice the HDD activity light on when it just sits there? Are there any clicks or clunks from the drive.

It could also possibly be the RAM, do you have another machine you can put the HDD and RAM into to test?

Crappy PSU also could be an issue, but I would test the RAM first.

you just mount the iso to a cd. It's pretty small so it shouldn't take but a minute. Then just boot to the cd, and let it do its thing.

I would guess RAM or hdd. Run a bootable memtest for 3 or so passes and see if you get any errors. You may also want to reset CMOS and make sure all RAM timings/voltages are set to what they should be. Also, I usually make sure everything is set to stock (as in no OC) before doing a fresh install.

Try clearing CMOS and giving it another try.Or try booting from the OS disk to repair the installation.
