Default Unexplained blue screen

I'm trying to dualboot XP and Vista on my new Fujitsu T5010, so i popped in my XP install cd to partition the drive and all that jazz. However, once the CD is running and it gets to the "windows is starting" part, i get a blue screen and I have to shut down. It looks like it references a memory location, but I ran memtest for 6 hours and didnt find anything. what else could it be?

1.) Most laptops (the ones that don't come with a recovery disk) have a hidden partition where the recovery information is stored. To do what you want, you have to delete that partition (and never be able to restore again).

2.) You can not install XP after Vista is already installed. Well, you can, but not the way you are doing it. Search MS for details/directions. You have to edit both XP's and Vista's boot loaders.

this is kind of a separate question, but my laptop has recovery discs, and also has a D drive that's 1 gig. the fujitsu t5010 has an option for an intel 'turbocache' that only vista uses. is it possible that this 1 gig empty drive is that turbocache? if it is, should i create a 1 gig partition for vista to use?

right so i was hoping that by installing xp first i wouldnt run into this problem. i had xp installed first on my desktop, and installed vista after on another partition. then whenever i boot up im asked if i want to boot vista or 'an older version of windows.' that'll work, won't it?

thanks for all the help

PS i still dont know why i get a blue screen when i try to run winxp install cd

"t5010 has an option for an intel 'turbocache'" ...I have no idea what that is.

"that'll work, won't it?" ...always does for me!

yeah the turbocache is apparently this bit of hard disk space (or RAM, not totally sure) that vista will use to increase performance

iv been on microsoft's website searching the stop error that i got, not finding much thusfar

right, of course!

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
...
technical information:
*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78D2524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)"

i googled the error and got to this page from microsoft. they say it could be:
  • a virus in the boot sector of the device, but im trying to boot an install cd, so that doesnt seem likely to me. nevertheless i ran a boot-time scan with avast, found one trojan, got rid of it, still didnt work
  • something wrong with the boot controller and the device driver. i was thinking i might have to try hitting f6 to find the hard drive, but i never even got to that point in the install. and if i didnt have the right driver for the disk, the install cd would still boot all the way wouldnt it? it just wouldnt be able to find any disks
  • a "resource conflict between the boot controller and another controller"...???
i also started to read this page, and what they're saying may be applicable: the install cd doesn't contain the correct drivers for my system. the install cd is burned image i got from my university's server, and to me it kind of makes sense that it wouldn't have the necessary drivers to install xp on my lappy, which has the new intel gm45 express chipset (hell, it even has ddr3!). but its all speculation on my part really

Well it's the IDE/SATA drivers that they're referring to specifically. STOP 0x0000007B == INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE. Try supplying the drivers with F6.

MS sez:

Quote:
If you receive one of these error messages while you are installing Windows XP, update the computer BIOS or obtain Windows XP drivers for your hard disk controller (from the manufacturer of your computer, system board, or hard disk controller), or do both. For information about how to update your computer's BIOS or obtain Windows XP drivers, contact your computer manufacturer. For additional information about the availability of drivers, see the Device Driver Issues section in this article.
Or better yet, read your own username and install Linux.

what drivers tho? my lappy came with restore discs and a driver and software cd. would the drivers be on that latter cd? also, when i run the install cd, i always get the error right when it says "windows is starting" so i might not even get to a driver selection screen if i f6 it. but il try and let y'all know what happens.
