Default New Install of XP Pro - no DVD Decoder?
I recently formatted my old laptop and installed windows XP professional.

The problem - windows media player won't play DVDs. It says the laptop does not have a proper DVD decoder.

I'm assuming XP professional doesn't come with a DVD decoder. (XP Home Edition was originally on the laptop and I was able to watch DVDs then)

So my question:

Is there anywhere I can get a free LEGAL downloadable DVD decoder or a media player that will play DVDs? Or am I just forced to purchase a DVD decoder? (I see them range from $14.99 - $49.99)

Well, i'm really looking for a free DVD Decoder not just a free DVD player; unless there is a specific player that includes a decoder..

Besides...that site looks too fishy for me..

Are a DVD decoder (MPEG-2 decoder) and a codec one in the same??

I don't need a free media player - i need an MPEG-2 decoder to play the DVD.
