Download malwarebytes, run it, and clean up your PC. THere are numerous viruses that do that. Since it's been activated for 2 years, that's the most likely cause.

What anti-virus do you use?

If it's not a virus, it might be spyware or just general malware (interfere-ware does exist, but is not called as such), which is why I recommend running both antivirus AND malwarebytes. Malwarebytes eliminates many discrete malware.

Try Nod32 or Avast, both awesome AV software. Sounds like a virus to me.

First clean out your viruses and other malware as other people described above. Then visit http://www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on the Validate Windows link on the left. That should fix it up.

I had to do this after a BIOS corruption after a power surge. I re-activated it said it was genuine, but my desktop background still stayed black and has the watermark on it. So I changed desktop background back to what it was and rebooted and everything was okay.

It comes from microsoft windows update KB940510. Remove it and it should be fine

That's the Windows update that detects various Windows activation cracks. Removing it won't make your system genuine.

Yep, I'll second this statement. I had a computer class in middle school (..that i really didn't need..) that taught the class that the computer tower itself was referred to as a "CPU"... Looking back, seems horribly silly to call the whole shebang that. , oh well.

I wonder if they realize that CPU stands for Central Processing Unit? How does it make sense to have the whole thing called that...

Some nubs refer to their computer case as the cpu. Don't ask me why...
