Default Comprehensive Windows 7 Beta x64 vs Vista Ultimate SP1 x64 performance Benchmarks

Hm.. I posted this on a different subforum.. seems more fitting here lol.
Anyway may i present you guys... :P

Windows 7 build 7000 x64 Vs. Windows Vista Ultimate Sp1 x64 Performance Bench
Also slap on my netbook (Samsung NC10) for some benches just for laughs xD

Benchmark Rig Specs

CPU- Core2Quad Q6700 2.66Ghz @ 3.6Ghz (QDR1440 x 10)
Mobo- EVGA 750i FTW sz17 Bios
Ram- 4x 2Gb Corairs XMS2 ddr6400 800mhz @ 5/5/5/18/2T

Optical- Sony DRU-810A

CPU- Intel Atom N270 1.6ghz single core with HT
Mobo- Uh?
Ram- 1x 1Gb ddr800
HDD-160Gb 5400rpm
GPU- Integrated FTW
PSU- Brick
Sound- Onboard
Optical- DOESN'T EXIST
OS XP Home

Drivers Used for Benchmark
  • Graphics- GeForce 181.20
  • Chipset- NForce 15.23
  • Sound- Not used

Disclaimer: As you guys know, this is only the Beta version of Windows 7 and in no way, shape or form represent the final shipping product. This is just a benchmark i'm doing on my freetime to give myself and you guys a better insight of how the beta version Windows 7 performs compared to Vista Ultimate. It may not be as accurate as other professional benchmarkers aka tomshardware/ anandtech/ xbitlabs etc. But i've done everything i possibly can to rule out any variables that may otherwise affect benchmark results. All benchmarks are ran with a clean install of the operating system with all services disabled. Only Window's Default services plus the ones required to run the benchmark are active. (I have done nothing to tweak either OS running processes.

First off, just want to give you guys my impression on Windows 7 Beta ATM,
Pros
  • UAC ALOT less annoying. But i disabled it nonetheless.
  • Safely remove hardware console greatly improved.
  • Uses DX11 xD
  • Love the redesigned start menu, shows recent files associated with program .
  • Redesigned Taskbar = Gosu, kind of like the Mac "Dock" in a way,
  • The Display resolution settings screen finally updated, the first time since Windows 95
  • The Snipping tool will most likely make the "print screen" button obsolete.
Cons
  • IE8 Seems a liitle buggy, repeatly encountering random crashes, even with complete new reinstall of the os.
  • SLI is badly optimized in W7 atm. Lots of game crashes with SLI enabled.
  • Networking Stack died randomly, cause me to reinstall W7 again, Did it 3 times total for W7 benchmark
  • Alot of hardware isn't supported atm, such as my X-Fi card
  • Punkbuster don't work with W7's API, thus i can't do a COD4 Benchmark

Okay.. enough typing.. Down to the results

That marks the end of all benches that i ran. Also just to point out a few things from my few days of using Windows 7. So far i've came across these apps that don't work with W7
Misc Pictures-
Windows 7 Experience Index Score for my Rig-
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m...nchmark/W7.png

Clean install CPU/ RAM usage
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m...lidleusage.png

Last words- Windows 7 Rc1 Build 7000 looks very promising to me. It outperforms Vista Ultimate 64 in majority of the tests. And during my beta testing, the o/s is very snappy and responsive, tho still abit buggy. Microsoft is definately on the right track for this.. Kinda like "Vista 2" in a way. Microsoft never gets it right the first time and perfects it the second time around..

History
Windows 95 = Bad, but major release
Windows 98 Fixes windows 95 and increase hardware support

Window ME= Failure.. exception to the rule

Windows 2000- New API, but fail
Windows XP, Builds upon 2000 and suceeds.

Windows Vista- Fail release, tho SP1 redeemed it
Windows 7- Sucessor to Vista? Lets hope.

Anyway, i'm really satified with Windows 7 ATM. Lets hope they don't mess it up down the road

Eek - nice write up.

For your X-FI Gamer you have two options to get the drivers to work. You can download the regualr drivers, right click on them and run them in Vista Compatability Mode.

The other option is 3rd party drivers. I am using these: http://forums.creative.com/creativel...cending&page=1

They have worked great and I have the same card.

wow, i really appreciate this thread, you did an excellent job of benching, with multiple tries, same hardware etc. thank you
sorry if this is a bit much to ask, but do you think you could run at least a few of these benches on server2008 x64?
(i'm on my wii, so i cant link the site with the conversion steps to make it a very nice home OS)
its what i use, and i find it leaps and bounds better than vista, and i also feel that windows 7 is slightly snappier, but i'm sure that has to do with a clean install versus an old install :P

i would run some benches myself, but i would like to get another HDD for this first :P
if i could get my hands on a HDD to use for a bit (which i might be able to) i will do some benches when my gx2 comes back from RMA
+rep to you kind sir.
