Superfetch is a fancy name for Vista handling ram WAY WAY better than xp. It is arguably the most advanced ram usage in any os except windows 7.

Windows xp is a great os. Its still the best software for a lower end or older machine. I use it on my 4 year old dell laptop. But for a modern rig like the one you are building, vista will serve you better.

Anyway, I'm done with this thread. If you decide to get xp so be it. Its still a great operating system and I'm sure you'll be happy whichever way you decide to go.

If you already have XP then just use that. No point in buying an OS that'll get replaced in a few months. The only downside about XP (32 bit) is not being able to use all 4GB of ram.

I say Vista 64-bit SP1 is my personal preference, no problems here. I like it much better than XP.

As for dual vs quad, if you are using DDR3 memory, there is no reason to go 775, as DDR3 mobos for 775 are still expensive, aren't they? You can get a core i7 920 for much cheaper than a Q9550. Take that extra cash you would spend on the Q9550, put it towards a decent $225-250 1366 board, and go i7. You may not be able to run triple channel, but that's not a necessity. Just run it as-is, and upgrade to triple channel RAM later on down the line when prices come down.

Q9550 is only 267 for me, Pretty sure i7 920 is still 290 ish?

Gigabyte EP45T-UD3P, DDR3 775 mobo, is 160ish Shipped,

No matter how I look at that, doesnt seem advisable to my usage, maybe if i can turn hyperthreading off, as My 2 core Games will effectively run on 1 core due to hyperthreading on the i7 platform = Less performance.

You can turn hyperthreading off,

i7s are a great value atm, the issue is that ram and motherbords are quite expensive. You could use your ram, as has been said, but the motherboard will still cost you a bit.

Also turbo boost is fantastic for gaming. See this article http://mikeabundo.com/2008/11/19/int...7-turbo-boost/

Also, vista and xp both work the same way with installs.

You can get an OEM version of xp or vista for cheaper, that can only be installed on one machine.

Both operating systems also have "retail" versions that can be installed over and over again.

man.. I am really just flat out getting annoyed, as I want to build a nice machine here, but people telling me to ditch my DDR3 and find a buyer...
It's not a "new OS" though. It's the vista Kernel, it's actually very very similar to Vista. Most of the drivers are vista compatible.

Like he said, PB does fail in Win7 but I've had few issues with anything else.

It's not been truly released to the public? microsoft.com is avaliable to the public.

Since the release of Vista 64, there have been absolutely no issues with getting drivers for XP64. I've been running it for over a year and every single driver update for hardware has had both vista and XP 64 driver launches simultaneously.

I have two identical systems (see my sig rig), one running XP64 and the other Vista 64.

Comparing XP64 and vista 64 side by side in benchmarks is not a good idea. XP64 wins every time
Because it's true? I had horrible driver support with my 8800GTS 512 in x64.
