I will be running a new machine and am trying to buy the parts today.
I am heavily deciding between the E8400 and Q9550 I have the cash for both, either which way I will be happy I am sure. I will be running 4 x 1 GB of 1600mhz DDR3 With the possibility of upgrading later to 2 x 2gb + 2x1gb for 6gb Total Ram The reason will simply be just because I can. Question is. Do I flat out need to have Vista 64 bit for the Quad proc? or should I just hang out wih XP Pro (hopefully find a 64-bit edition if i do the 6gb) and wait for proper releases of Windows 7? As most poeple tell me running 4gb of ram will be more than ok even in 32 bit XP Pro, but I was just worried aobut XP Pro not really being meant for quad cores. I really need the best imput for this possible. I may actually just decide to keep with XP Pro 32 bit for some time, and worry about it later if I get the extra memory. Keep in mind, My thing is all about Computer Game performance! I dont play ANYTHING with DX10 as of right now and I will be using my Current GPU for a while. Question comes back to. 4 gb Ram on XP Pro, Dual Core, or Quad Core? Reasons as to why on one vs the other? when I get the extra 2 x 2 GB Sticks, wait for Windows 7? or find someone to buy Vista Home/Business 64bit? Dual or Quad Core? Thank you.

remember that 32 bit OS cannot support more then 3330 MB of ram including vRAM [GPU memory] if you will be happy whit any of these CPUs go whit a quad , 2x2gb +Vista 64bit premium is enough. i will edit later to be more correct atm i go .

I would say go for Vista x64 if you plan having 4gb of RAM. XP x64 is slightly iffy with drivers. Windows 7 is another option, but you will have to go back to XP once the beta period is over (end of July 09)

Get windows 7 beta (it can still be found) (would that be legal? i dunno). Then get windows 7 when it comes out.

No windows 7 beta, please remember, Gaming is the big key here

XP Pro is fine for quad. You don't need 64bit OS for quad. Windows 7 still has long way to become a mature OS. You can try Vista 32/64. Just do dual-boot with XP.

EDIT: Also DDR3 on skt775 is somewhat pointless. For DDR3 go I7 but IMO its best to stick with DDR2 with 775.

One and Only 1 reason why i am doing DDR3 memory is that I have a butt load of Free DDR3 memory.. Unless i am going to sell it off than I would prefer to just USE it and be happy as heck. now since it is only 4 x 1 GB 1600mhz DDR sticks, i7 with Tri Channel seems Liek I would be un happy. and with the possibility that I will be receiving another 2 x 2 GB Set of DDR3 1800mhz to play with, it would REALLY seem unlikely that i7 would be a usefull way for me to go.
